"Go make disciples of all nations"-- THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD.

Gospel: Mt 28: 18-20.

Dear friends,

Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, celebrating the moment when forty days after his resurrection, Our Lord Jesus Christ ascended in glory into heaven, to return to his heavenly throne, triumphant and victorious in the sight of all his disciples who witnessed the events and testified about it on their mission.

After Jesus's Ascension, What are we to do? Do we sit around and wait for something to happen or do we go and do something? Sitting around and waiting for something to happen was the mistakenGustave_Doré_-_LAscension view of some disciples and even of some Christians today. Jesus said we are not to sit around and wait, we are to do something, "You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth."( Acts 1: 8). In the Gospel, before Jesus Ascended into heaven, he entrusted his mission to the Apostles saying," _Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations".( Mt 28:19). In such a state of chaos following the death and resurrection of their teacher, it would have been very easy for the disciples not to move from their comfort zones. But as the disciples returned to Jerusalem full of Joy, they were energized for the mission of proclaiming the good news. We too are therefore invited to engage actively in his great mission.

Let us not be afraid of embracing this new future inaugurated by Jesus. He has promised to be with us. In this mission we are not alone. May what we celebrate today serve to remind us of our commitment to the vision of Jesus, which is to build God's kingdom on the right relationship and love (Caritas). When we share his word in words and actions, When we struggle to overcome our selfishness and forgive those who injure us we are united with him in his mission. As we reach out to others with kindness, care and compassion, more so, during this lockdown of Covid-19, we find him.

Let us go forward in this mission; to make disciples, to make a difference in the world, confident of the victory of Christ and his promise to be with us till the end of time. He moves to reign and he leaves us a mission. We are always disciples of the living Christ, seeking to be like him. But we have to start being Apostles too. The message has to be delivered. The Good News has to be preached. We are the witnesses. We are the ones sent. We are Apostles. Let us go..... Let us go.....Amen
