“Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger, abounding in mercy.” – Psalm 103:8

God our Father is merciful. That is the key theme of this Jubilee Year. It is a central message of Lent too. But, the fact that God is merciful also says something about you and me. We are sinners. If we were not, then there would be no need for God to be merciful in the first place!

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?” – Psalm 27:1 

The first scripture passage for this Second Sunday of Lent may strike us modern readers as rather gruesome. The story comes from the 15th chapter of the book of Genesis, and it tells how the Lord God ratified his covenant with Abram (later Abraham), the father of the Israelite People.

“The devil said to him… ‘All this will be yours, if you worship me.’ Jesus said to him in reply, ‘It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.’” – Luke 4:6-8

As we begin this Lenten season, it is important to realign our focus upon the first and foremost Commandment: The LORD is God, He alone. We should worship none other than He, and we should love Him with all our heart.
