The New Evangelization and the Mission of CARITAS For Children

Sometimes when individuals come across a certain way of thinking about God or faith, the Church or doctrine they’ll attempt to take whatever that notion is, and reconstruct it, if you will, into their particular mission or ministry. With the advent of the New Evangelization there is no need to insert its meaning or character into the culture and ministry of CARITAS For Children because the very soul of our identity reflects The New Evangelization.

The term itself is a misnomer, because there really is nothing “new” about it. Rather it is a rediscovering of the joy of believing, whose roots can be traced all the way back to the exuberance of those first believers, whose zealous ardor for the Church sent them as disciples to the corners of the earth, with a message of great inspiration in the person of Jesus Christ alive in their hearts and spirits.

Nurturing faith in our children. Nurturing faith in our children.

So much of the New Evangelization is revealed in our CARITAS work and purpose. The Church has always been engaged in three kinds of missionary efforts. Our first mission was ad gentes, the proclamation of Christ to non-Christian persons. Pope Benedict Emeritus reminded us of this responsibility to evangelize in his motu proprio (meaning on his own initiative) Ubicumque et Semper. The Church has a duty everywhere and at all times to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Our second mission is the constant activity of the Church, which aims to deepen the lifelong formation, discipleship and investment of our practicing Catholic members. The New Evangelization’s focus targets disenfranchised, alienated or secularized former members of our Church whose faith, investment, and personal belief has become tired, discouraged, or even rejected. The New Evangelization then, enables once again an encounter with Jesus Christ.

There is nothing that could sum up more the core and spirit of CARITAS For Children than this encounter with the person of Jesus Christ in another. It’s the heart of all we do. We enable Jesus himself to be glimpsed in the faces of our children for the hearts of our supporters, by embracing Christ’s’ call to love one another as I have loved you. We reignite the faith and belief of our lay faithful by reminding them of their great commission by Jesus himself to love in the name of Christ in the everyday world. We enrich the spirits of our sponsors in their relationships with our children and the communion with us in our global ministry.

By reawakening faith, by deepening service to the Church, by inviting engagement with our world’s most vulnerable, with divine love at the center, CARITAS For Children lives the universal call to holiness as the pursuit of every Christian’s purpose, and the missionary witness at work in the life and soul of every true believer of Jesus Christ. These essential charisms of the New Evangelization are clearly seen through the eyes of our CARITAS For Children’s global ministry.
