GOSPEL: LUKE 16:1-13

BE A FAITHFUL STEWARD

Dear friends,

Today’s Gospel introduces us to one such money-lender, an absentee landlord. Who puts all his affairs in the hands of his manager – his enterprises and considerable legal powers, all were handed over to this manager (steward). There is an admiration for the dishonest steward—not for his dishonesty but for his ability to figure his way out of a mess that he had created. What about us? How able are we to figure out our mess?

God owns everything and we are stewards or managers of what He has entrusted to us. We are stewards of our time, our abilities, and our possessions and money. In the parable, the steward was squandering his master’s possessions (16:1). While the Lord allows us to enjoy the bounty of His material blessings (1 Tim. 6:17), He also wants us to focus on storing up the treasure of a good foundation for the future by being generous and ready to share (1 Tim. 6:18, 19).

We should be even more prudent by using the wealth of this world which has no eternal value in order to pursue those things that have true eternal value. Remember the vital words of our Master, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:19&20). We should be faithful in whatever God brings into our lives.

Every business manager knows that the owner will be checking the books to see how things are going. The idea of accountability is inherent in the concept of management or stewardship. As faithful stewards, we are called to show the same character as our master, Jesus Christ. We are called to serve. Faithful stewards of all that God has given to us. Jesus draws the line in the sand and makes us ask, “Who is my Master: God or Money?” God blesses us with wealth, so that we can serve and bless others; the needy and the poor. Let us also strive and figure out our mess and demonstrate that we know and love our master; the living God to whom we are always accountable.

God Bless,
