GOSPEL: Luke 9, 11-17

The solemnity of the Body of Christ (Corpus Christi), is the feast of the very center and heart of our faith, and the center and heart of the lives of each of us: Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), reminds us all of the wonderful gift of God to us through Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. While the primary focus of this solemnity is on the spiritual nourishment that Christ gives us, its secondary focus is on the Body of Christ which is the Church.

But in the first place, why did Jesus give us this sacrament?  Firstly, Jesus said that he came that we may have life and have it to the full (John 20:20). In the Eucharist, he provides a visible means of communicating this life to us so that we can be fully alive both in this world and in the next. (John 6:53-54).

Secondly, Jesus promised to be with us until the end of time (Matthew 28:20). As Jesus said, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.”  In the Eucharist he provides a visible sign and an effective means of him being present to us and us being present to him.

The Body and Blood of Christ (Eucharist), the most excellent of gifts ever given to us by Christ shows how much God loves and cares for both our temporal and spiritual welfare. Therefore, we are also called upon to reciprocate this love by loving our fellow men (Caritas). May God increase our faith to help us be transformed more like him as we receive his Body and Blood.

God Bless,
