Distracted! Who are you listening to?

"My Sheep Hear My Voice and Follow Me." (Jn. 10:27)

We live in a world with thousands of voices screaming for our attention. Every one of them trying to communicate a message. All trying to push their own agenda. A world with thousands of voices of distraction. False voices screaming for our attention from every possible direction and device.

Since only one voice truly has our best interest at heart. There is always need to discern the true voice from the many distracting false voices. There is need to listen to Christ’s voice from the many competitive voices. But how do we pull that voice out from the noise? How do we cut through the thousands of distractions and focus on the one true voice of wisdom?

Jesus is very confident that his sheep hear his voice and obey his commandments. They recognize him as their shepherd and follow him. As long as the sheep listen to his voice and go where he leads, they are safe. The reward for hearing and obeying His voice is eternal life.

However, there are moments in life when we feel disturbed and confused. When we feel lost and afraid. When we feel alone and abandoned. When we feel challenged, depressed, distracted and confused. When no longer listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd clearly. We really want somebody to find us, to call to us, to lovingly embrace us, and to tell us things are going to be okay. Even in such moments, Jesus the good shepherd will always look for us, find us, recognize us, bind our wounds, and take us to still waters and green pastures.

After being found, consoled and healed, we too become wounded healers. Christ’s lost sheep need to hear encouragement from us. Not more ranting and berating. Not insults and attempts limiting God’s care and mercy. But living out God’s word. We are called to help others listen and discern Christ’s voice from the many competing, distracting voices. We are invited to give the best we can of ourselves in sharing the best of our life, in sharing love and compassion and knowing that each of us with whatever our talents and goodness are, can partner God in guiding others to him.

May the grace of the Lord be with you all this week as you continue to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd.
